Ratified in 1788, The U.S. Constitution outlines the powers of the three branches of government and establishes the rights of all Americans. The document united the 13 independent states in a spirit of compromise and set forth the official viewpoint of a newly unified nation. Its most significant feature are the amendment provisions.
