In 1628, an English fleet left Britain for the St. Lawrence River led by the adventurer privateer Kirke Brothers. Samuel de Champlain, anxiously awaited relief ships from France to feed the residents of Quebec who were on the point of starvation. In 1629, the five Kirke brothers, now aware of the desperate conditions facing the Quebecers, demanded a French surrender of the fort, settlement and fur-trading post. English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen Elizabeth the First, Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era. He played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. Pioneering colonist Ferdinando Gorges (1565-1647) was a British naval, military commander, was a key figure and major promoter of the English colonization of New England, and investor in the Popham Colony. His early involvement in English trade with and settlement of North America as well as his efforts in founding the Province of Maine earned him the title of the "Father of English Colonization in North America," even though he never set foot in the New World. Elizabethan ‘Sea Dog’ Sir Richard Grenville (1542-91) was Walter Raleigh’s cousin and an English privateers who was authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, even during times of peace. Carrying letters of marque issued by the English Crown, the Sea Dogs frequently attacked both enemy shipping at sea and enemy outposts on land... frequently targeting the Spanish in North American waters and ports.
