In 1682, Robert de La Salle embarked on an expedition to navigate the Mississippi River from its northern source near the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. During this expedition, La Salle and his party constructed a small fort along the Big Muddy called Fort Prud'homme in West Tennessee. Thereafter, he ultimately reached the mouth of the Mississippi, where he formally claimed the vast River Valley territory for France, naming it La Louisiane or Louisiana, in honor of Saint Louis and King Louis the Fourteenth. La Salle also encountered various Native American tribes along his journey, including the Natchez, whose contentious relationship with the French over the ensuing decades led to a dramatic climax in 1729; highlighting the complex interactions between European adventurers and Native American populations during this period of exploration and colonization.
