In this episode, we looked at Josiah Strong’s Our Country and the wider Protestant fears that shaped late nineteenth century America, especially anxiety over Catholic immigrants, cities, and the future of the nation. We then connected those ideas to the racialized hatred faced by Italian immigrants, culminating in the 1891 mass lynching in New Orleans, where anti-immigrant prejudice and public violence collided.
