In this episode, Steve Guerra and Patrick Young return from the English exile communities abroad to look at what happened to those who remained in England after 1066. They explore the persecution of native clergy, the forced replacement of the Anglo-Saxon church order, and the remarkable protest of the Anonymous of York, who saw England standing at a crossroads as Rome and the Normans reshaped everything. This is the story of how an older English Christian world was not only conquered, but systematically erased.Subscribe to Forgotten Christianity on Substack: https://forgottenchristianity.substack.com/ #HistoryOfThePapacy #ForgottenChristianity #NormanConquest #AngloSaxonEngland #ChurchHistory #MedievalHistory #AnonymousOfYork #GregorianReform #ChristianHistory #EnglishHistory Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments section below! The earliest bishops of Rome stepped into a Christian movement that was still taking shape, full of local traditions, theological disputes, and competing claims of authority. This episode follows figures like Linus, Clement, Anacletus, Victor, Zephyrinus, Callistus, and Hippolytus as the Roman church begins to emerge as a center of leadership before Nicaea. #HistoryOfThePapacy #ChurchHistory #EarlyChristianity #RomanEmpire #AnteNiceneLet us know what you think about this episode in the comments section below! In this episode, we follow a strange line from Lydia Maria Child’s The American Frugal Housewife into one of the oddest and most fascinating episodes in early American religious history. Mordechai Manuel Noah, one of the most prominent Jewish Americans of the early 19th century, imagined Grand Island in the Niagara River as Ararat, a city of refuge for the Jewish people. The plan failed almost immediately, but it still reveals an early form of proto-Zionism and the complicated place of religious minorities in the American project. #HistoryOfThePapacy #JewishHistory #AmericanReligiousHistory #GrandIsland #Zionism #Israel #ChristianZionism #Jewish #Judaism #MiddleEast #Palestine #MordechaiManuelNoah #ReligiousHistory #EarlyAmerica #HistoryPodcast Listen or Watch:https://youtu.be/wn5MRYwrnsk Support the show:Patreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8Ehttps://www.youtube.com/@thehistoryofthepapacyHave questions, comments or feedback? After the Norman Conquest, many Anglo-Saxon nobles, clergy, and warriors refused to submit and instead chose exile, fleeing not just to Scotland and Scandinavia, but all the way to Constantinople and the Eastern Roman Empire. The episode explores the remarkable tradition of around 10,000 English exiles traveling by ship, receiving lands from the emperor, and helping form English communities far from home, even in places remembered as a kind of early “New England” on the Black Sea. Steve Guerra and Patrick Young also trace how these exiles entered imperial service through the Varangian Guard, showing that the fall of Anglo-Saxon England did not mean the end of its people, identity, or Christian inheritance. In this episode, Steve Guerra and Patrick Young explored how the Norman Conquest reshaped far more than the English throne, remaking the Church, culture, and power structures of Anglo-Saxon England. They discussed papal backing for William’s invasion, the drive for ecclesiastical uniformity, the displacement of native clergy, and the deeper changes that rippled across the Christian world after 1066. This was not only the story of a conquest, but of how the Normans helped remake the Christian world. #HistoryOfThePapacy #ForgottenChristianity #NormanConquest #1066 #ChurchHistory #MedievalHistory #AngloSaxonEngland #ChristianHistory Subscribe to Forgotten Christianity on Substack: https://forgottenchristianity.substack.com/ Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments section below!
