EXTRA 83. Exploring New England
STORY OF AMERICA — Present-day New England is a region comprising six states in the Northeastern United States: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. English plans to colonize this part of America began to take concrete form at the turn of the 17th century. The first expedition to set out from England was led by Bartholomew Gosnold (1571-1607), an English sea captain who led the first recorded European expedition to Cape Cod, Provincetown, Cuttyhunk Island, and Martha's Vineyard.
