June 24 is St. John’s Day, one of the oldest and highest-ranking Christian feasts. It celebrates the miraculous birth of the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus Christ. This annual liturgical feast is also known as The Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist, kept in the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglicanism, and Protestant Lutheranism. This special day observes the story of the Jewish high priest Zechariah, his wife Elizabeth, and the birth of their son John the Baptist who proclaimed the coming Messiah. The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist comes from the Gospel of Luke. Only three birthdays are celebrated on the traditional liturgical calendar: Jesus (Christmas), the Virgin Mary (Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary), and John the Baptist. This type of feast is thus a rare observance & is symbolically timed and placed exactly six months before Christmas, aligning with the Gospel of Luke's account of the Annunciation. It is also tied to the summer solstice, reflecting Saint John’s humble words about Christ: "He must increase, but I must decrease."
