Episode 86: Jacob Baradaeus – Changing the Game Description: Today we’re going to do another quick survey of what was going on in other parts of the Christian world. All too often, I have to skim over or entirely skip some really interesting bits of the history of the Church. Sometimes small pieces of history can make a big difference later on. That is the case with the topic of today’s episode. Jacob Baradaeus is one such person who didn’t quite fit into the narrative of previous episodes, but this humble monk who lived thousands of miles from Rome set off events that would make an enormous difference after his times. We will look at the life of Jacob Baradaeus and why he was so important not only to the history of Christianity, but also the Popes of Rome. Sidetrack Episode 76 ST 76 Quo Vadis with The Partial Historians Description: Today I have a really special episode I recorded with the great hosts of the podcast The Partial Historians. Dr. Greenfield and Dr. Radford are not only experts in the Roman Empire, they also know a thing or two about film. You will hear a conversation about the movie Quo Vadis. This is a great movie from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Doctors Greenfield and Radford show us many of the great parts of this film, the history behind the movie and some of the background of the film itself. This conversation was a great time. The movie has some serious issues, but it also stands up pretty well. Spend an hour or so with me and the Partial Historians learning about the movie and then 3 and a half more hours to enjoy the movie itself. It is a whole day well spend! Episode 85The Fall and Rise of RomeDescription: Today we have a special episode called the Fall and Rise of Rome. I prepared and recorded this episode for Robin Pierson and it originally was published on his History of Byzantium podcast feed. Someone had a question for him about what was happening in Rome and western Europe during the early Byzantine period. I looked at how the decline of the political Roman Empire in the west corresponded with the rise of Christianity and the Papacy in the west. I also discuss the demographics and state of the actual city of Rome during this period. I think you will really enjoy. This episode is a nice review and launch to the next phase of the early medieval period we are getting into. Episode 84The Lombards with Mike Corradi of A History of Italy PodcastDescription: Today we have a special collaboration episode with Mike Corradi of the podcast A History of Italy. I can’t say how much I enjoy this show. It is so well researched and presented. It is funny, informative and entertaining. A History of Italy really has everything you want on one of the best topics out there. In this collaboration, we talk about a group of people who came into Italy during the fall of the Ostrogothic kingdom and during the Byzantine Wars: The Lombards. They were another Germanic people that made life interesting, to say the least, for the population of Italy. Mike will get us up to speed with the Lombards and give us a little taste of his show. Episode 81: Theodore of TarsusDescription: Today I am very happy to be joined by Professor James Early for another week to discuss how Christianity was reintroduced to the British Isles. In this second part of our conversation, James shows us how Anglo Saxon Christianity was affected by a very unique individual named Theodore of Tarsus, Arch Bishop of Caterbury. Why and how could a person of Tarsus in the south east of modern day Turkey make it from there to Rome to England in the middle of the 600s. This was the dark ages! Well James will walk us through Theodore’s incredible story!
