Eastern Virginia is called ‘Tidewater’ because the rivers moved to the rhythm of the ocean before they finally merge with Chesapeake Bay. The area between the James and York rivers is known simply as "the peninsula," and it is here that our story unfolds. The entire peninsula is rich in history. The mouth of the James River aligns directly with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. As Virginia's longest river, the James enabled the early settlers to explore far inland in search of the fable passage to the wealth of China. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the fighting on the Western Front ceased, marking Armistice Day and the end of the Great War, World War one. Following World War two, the name was changed in many countries to commemorate those who died in both wars and all subsequent conflicts. This solemn day to honor veterans and remember those who have died in military service is now recognized as Veterans Day in the United States, or Remembrance Day in Commonwealth countries, including Canada. World War One was a global conflict whose horrendous battlefields consumed a generation of young men on Europe’s Western Front. One such man was Canadian medical doctor, poet, and soldier John McCrae. His experiences on the battlefield moved him to compose “In Flanders Fields” which became the most famous poem of The Great War. Moina Michael, an American woman moved by the poem, was inspired to adopt the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who died in the War to end all Wars—her life's work advocating for veterans' welfare as "The Poppy Lady," spread this remembrance movement throughout North America, parts of Europe, and beyond. In 1622, a French explorer and interpreter Étienne Brûlé is credited with being the first European to see Lake Superior. Located between Canada and the United States Lake Superior is one of the largest bodies of freshwater in the world. In 1668, Jesuit Fathers Claude Dablon and Claude-Jean Allouez were on the Lake with Jesuit explorer Jacques Marquette, and they were the first to inform the world of the rich copper mines of that region. Other European explorers who visited Lake Superior include French fur traders Pierre Espirit Radisson and Médard Chouart des Groseilliers in 1659-60, and Daniel Greysolon Duluth from 1679–1686. In 1602, Captain Bartholomew Gosnold (born in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England) pioneered a direct sailing route due west from the Azores to the New World in what later became New England. He and his crew explored the coastline with the intention of establishing a colony and small fishing outpost in the southern part of Massachusetts on Cuttyhunk Island.
