History of North America

Let’s wrap-up the fascinating life, times, deeds, and exploits of Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635), the Father of New France. In 1629 Champlain suffered the humiliation of having to surrender his almost starving garrison to an English fleet that appeared before Quebec. He was taken to England as a prisoner. Peace, however, had been declared between England and France before the surrender, and New France was accordingly restored to the French. Champlain returned from Europe to spend his few remaining years. He became governor of New France in 1633 and died in his beloved Quebec City 2 years later on Christmas Day, 1635. The Bubonic Plague spread through Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa and in some locations, over half of the population died. Those who survived found themselves in an altered reality where the social and economic rules had been totally changed. Nezahualcoyotl was a scholar, warrior, architect, poet and eventual ruler of the city-state of Texcoco in Mesoamerica during the century preceding Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in the Valley of Mexico—a highlands plateau surrounded by mountains and volcanoes (coterminous with present-day Mexico City) that was the center for several pre-Columbian civilizations. Before the group of Puritan colonists left England for the New World in 1630, John Winthrop (1588-1649) delivered an inspirational final message filled with the hope for what America could become. The sermon is titled, ‘The Model Of Christian Charity,’ but is famous for the line, "City on a Hill." This line would go on to become popular in political discussions of the United States of America, however, in this sermon, it meant so much more than that. John Winthrop (1588-1649) was an English Puritan lawyer and one of the leading figures in founding the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the second major settlement in New England following Plymouth Colony. Winthrop delivered a sermon before he led the first large wave of colonists across the Atlantic ocean from England in 1630. The sermon is famous largely for its use of the phrase “a city on a hill,” used to describe the expectation that the Massachusetts Bay Colony would shine like an example to the world. He served as governor for 12 of the colony's first 20 years.
