At Stadacona, Jacques Cartier and his followers passed a bitter winter with the help of Iroquoian Chief Donnacona. Sailing upstream, Jacques Cartier reached the end of navigation at a large island in the St. Lawrence River. Here he found another Amerindian village, called Hochelaga, on the site of the present city of Montreal, Canada. From the height behind it, to which he gave the name Mont Real—better known today as Mont Royal or Mount Royal in English—he could see the foaming Lachine Rapids blocking the way to the upper waters of the St. Lawrence.   Saint Marie de l'Incarnation (1599-1672) was a French Ursuline nun. As part of a group of sisters sent to New France in 1639 to establish the Ursuline Order, Marie was crucial in the spread of Catholicism in New France. She was a religious author and has been credited with founding the first girls' school in the New World. Saint François de Laval (1623-1708) was a French Catholic prelate who served as Apostolic Vicar of New France from 1658-74 and as Bishop of Quebec from 1674 until he retired due to poor health in 1688. He continued to work in New France until his death in 1708. He was declared a Saint in 2014. First known European penetration of the interior of the continent through the St. Lawrence River gateway took place in 1535, when Jacques Cartier returned as leader of a new expedition.
