The original printing of the Authorized Version of the King James Bible was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, in 1611 as a complete folio Bible. The original printing was made before English spelling was standardized and there were no illustrations at all in the Authorized Version, the main form of decoration being the historiated initial letters provided for books and chapters – together with the decorative title pages to the Bible itself, and to the New Testament. The Authorized Version's written style is an important part of its influence on English, and its spread throughout North America. E174. KING JAMES BIBLE📖The task of translating the Bible into English was undertaken by a group of scholars approved by King James the First. All were members of the Church of England and most were clergy. The scholars worked on the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible in six committees, two based in each of the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Westminster. The committees included high churchmen, as well as scholars with Puritan sympathies—a spirit found in some of North America's first colonists. E173. One cannot underestimate the spiritual, cultural, political, and literary importance and influence of the Authorized Version's pre-eminence in the English-speaking world, including vast parts of North America. In 1604, King James convened the Hampton Court Conference, where a new English version of the Bible was conceived in response to the problems of the earlier translations perceived by the Puritans, an orthodox faction of the Church of England. Revered as a translator of the Bible into English (1526), William Tyndale (1494-1536) was a biblical scholar and linguist who became a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation in the years leading up to his execution for heresy. Over 90% of the King James Bible consist of his translated words that later influenced the trajectory of Christianity in the New World. E172.
