Meletius of Lycopolis may not be a household name, but this bishop from the middle of Egypt set the wheels in motion for the necessity of a Church wide council in 325. There were so many problems in the Egyptian Church, which magnified problems in other local churches, the Emperor Constantine felt he had to step in. Meletius of Lycopolis, probably inadvertently, gave the firebrand preacher Arius a perfect platform to spread his ideology.
